55% of India’s GCC work portfolio is under direct threat of AI displacement. That’s the finding that anchors our latest report, GCC AI Opportunity, published in partnership with Indiaspora.
We analyzed 1.7 million job descriptions across 200+ global enterprises and 60+ countries. We classified every role into four tiers: Commodities, Procedures, Grey Hair, and Rocket Science, and mapped where India stands against headquarters and every other major GCC location in the world.
What we found surprised us.
India’s portfolio has matured dramatically over the past decade. Work that requires deep expertise and frontier-level capability now makes up around 45% of the mix. India’s commodity share sits at 17.7% — far below most other non-HQ locations globally. In sectors like semiconductors, India’s share of frontier work actually exceeds that of headquarters. The old narrative about GCCs as cost centers is outdated.
But the procedural layer, 37.2% of India’s portfolio, remains heavily exposed. AI-native start-ups are already building products that go after exactly this work. They’re eating the portfolio from within, and the pace is accelerating with every model release.
Our core argument is simple. The journey from expertise to automation used to take decades. AI has compressed that into a single product cycle. The window to act is shrinking fast.
What we’ve built into this report for leaders:
A data-backed framework to audit your portfolio and understand your exposure.
A playbook centered on two moves: investing in genuine frontier capabilities through cross-disciplinary teams tackling measurable, high-stakes problems and deepening the domain expertise that AI struggles to replicate.
And a set of practical, Monday-morning actions you can take immediately, including putting a non-engineer on your next AI project and rethinking how you measure value across your portfolio.
We wrote this report because we believe the question facing every GCC leader today is uncomfortable but unavoidable: when the work you were built around starts to disappear, what do you become?
