Certain repetitive tech jobs are already seeing a decline in demand due to Generative AI. Both firms and individuals are under pressure as upskilling cycles are set to get faster and shorter, Annapurna Roy reports.
India’s huge advantage as a talent nation may come under threat as those who perform repetitive tasks are at the risk of being put out of jobs by generative artificial intelligence. This may put pressure on the IT industry to continuously upskill its talent pool, top executives and experts caution.
The country has to not just skill but unskill quickly, they said.
“If you define a structured curriculum, you train your trainers and they’re doing classroom training… The technology is changing so fast that it may have already moved farther along,” said Pari Natarajan, CEO of consultancy firm Zinnov.
Traditional rote-oriented learning would do a disservice to Indian talent in the current context, he added.
For technical skills, proficiency in cloud computing platforms, data science, analysis and visualisation, business intelligence, cybersecurity and DevOps should be focus areas, while developing specialised skills in AI, AR/VR, blockchain and others will be important.
